Oil Surge and Inflation Risks Raise Volatility
  • Global markets are entering Tuesday with oil prices, inflation and Federal Reserve expectations remaining at the center of investor attention. Renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran have pushed crude prices higher, increasing concerns that a prolonged rise in energy costs could put further pressure on global inflation.
  • U.S. markets are focusing on this week’s inflation data after stronger-than-expected August employment figures increased expectations for a more hawkish Federal Reserve. Producer prices are due Thursday, followed by the consumer price index on Friday, with both reports expected to play an important role in shaping expectations for the Fed’s next policy decision.
  • The Nasdaq remains particularly sensitive to the rise in Treasury yields and changing rate expectations. Technology and AI-related stocks have recently shown resilience, but higher borrowing costs and the possibility of a prolonged period of restrictive monetary policy could increase volatility across high-valuation growth stocks.
  • European markets are also being pressured by higher oil prices and renewed inflation concerns. The rise in crude prices is increasing expectations that the ECB could face greater difficulty in easing monetary policy, keeping the outlook for the DAX and broader European equities relatively cautious.
  • Asian markets are showing a stronger performance, with technology and semiconductor stocks providing support. However, rising oil prices and higher global interest-rate expectations remain key risks for the Nikkei, particularly given Japan’s sensitivity to energy costs and higher domestic bond yields.
  • Gold is trading higher as the U.S. dollar weakens ahead of the upcoming inflation data. Spot gold rose around 0.6% to approximately $4,430 per ounce, while investors continue to balance safe-haven demand against the possibility of higher U.S. interest rates.

Key market theme: Oil + inflation + Fed expectations. A sustained move in Brent toward the $100 level could reinforce inflation concerns, push bond yields higher and create additional pressure on the Nasdaq and other growth-oriented equities. At the same time, strong semiconductor and AI demand is providing support to technology stocks, while the DAX remains vulnerable to higher energy costs and the Nikkei continues to benefit from strength in chip-related stocks.

Global FX in Focus: Yen Strength, Dollar Risks and Central Bank Bets
  • JPY Rally Takes Center Stage: The yen has extended its sharp rally, with USD/JPY breaking below 155.00 and sliding toward 153.00.
  • Thin Liquidity Amplifies the Move: We notes that reduced liquidity around the U.S. holiday likely exaggerated the latest USD/JPY sell-off.
  • BoJ + GPIF Expectations Drive JPY: Markets are increasingly betting on a more hawkish Bank of Japan and greater domestic asset allocation by Japan’s GPIF, supporting the yen.
  • 152.00 Is the Key Support: A break below 152.00 could accelerate the move toward 150.00.
  • Carry Trade Unwinding Remains a Threat: Further unwinding of yen-funded carry trades could keep JPY under pressure.
  • Dollar Weakness Is Still Mostly Yen-Driven: The recent USD decline does not necessarily signal a broad-based structural shift against the dollar.
  • USD Still Has Fundamental Support: Strong U.S. payrolls and elevated oil prices, with Brent approaching $100, remain supportive of the dollar.
  • Fed Expectations in Focus: Markets are pricing only around 15bp of Fed tightening for September, while the possibility of a hike next week could challenge the sustainability of the yen rally. .
  • GBP Remains Relatively Resilient: Fiscal discipline messaging helped calm concerns around the U.K. bond market and supported sterling.
Daily Market Highlights
  • Geopolitical tensions are once again driving markets. Attacks on Saudi energy facilities and rising tensions in the Middle East pushed oil higher, with Brent approaching $99 and WTI around $94. Higher energy prices are increasing global inflation concerns.
  • U.S. equities remain cautious as higher oil prices could complicate the Fed’s fight against inflation. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is around 4.81%, keeping monetary policy expectations in focus.
  • Gold is trading around $4,400, under pressure from stronger Fed rate-hike expectations following the latest U.S. jobs data. However, a weaker dollar is providing some support. Markets are now looking ahead to U.S. PPI and, more importantly, Friday’s CPI report.
  • The Japanese yen continues to strengthen as expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike increase, reaching its strongest levels in several months.
