Global Market News Summary — 2 October 2026
  • The Nasdaq Composite ended 1 October at 26,871.60, up 0.04%. Micron Technology posted quarterly results showing revenue up fourfold, lifting chip shares broadly, while Alphabet gained after launching its latest Gemini model. The 10-year Treasury yield touched an intraday 5.342%, the highest since April 2002, with the 30-year at 5.663%. The dollar index set new 2026 highs near 102. Futures were little changed on Friday ahead of the September employment report.
  • Germany’s benchmark fell 1.25% on 1 October, with Deutsche Bank, Zalando and Bayer among the largest decliners. The STOXX 600 slipped 1% to its weakest level since mid-September, banks leading losses, as global bond yields held at multi-year highs. The 10-year Bund yield moved back above 3.6%, near levels last seen in June 2009, while money markets priced the ECB deposit rate near 2.8% by December. French yields reached a fresh 18-year high ahead of the government’s budget announcement.
  • The Nikkei 225 futures closed at 68475  on 1 October, up 2,203 points or 3.30%, its highest close since 17 August, after Micron’s revenue forecast drove gains in Advantest, Lasertec, Tokyo Electron and Kioxia. Market breadth was narrow and the Tankan survey came in softer; the index remains about 5.3% below its 52-week intraday high.
  • Spot gold settled at $4177 on 30 September, down 0.70%, after August PCE inflation came in at 3.4% year-on-year versus 3.7% expected, cutting October Fed hike odds to roughly 37%. Gold lost 6.7% over September. The metal broke below its prior $4,230–$4,510 range, with ETF holdings still rising by about 50 tonnes during the month.
  • The December Brent futures contract is currently trading at $102.36. Iran confirmed receipt of a US response on reviving a Gulf ceasefire, with Hormuz throughput reported at 13.2 million barrels per day. US crude inventories rose 922,000 barrels in the week to 25 September against an expected draw, while PetroChina suspended gasoline and jet fuel exports scheduled for October and Saudi Arabia resumed tanker loadings at Yanbu following the restart of its East–West pipeline. OPEC+ is expected to leave November output targets unchanged when it meets online on Sunday, 4 October.
