- Global markets are starting the week on a firmer note as easing oil prices provide some relief to investors. Brent crude has pulled back after reports of increased oil flows from the Middle East, while hopes of further supply normalization are helping reduce some of the recent pressure on global equities.
- U.S. equity futures are pointing to a positive opening, with Nasdaq 100 futures rising around 0.6% and S&P 500 futures gaining roughly 0.4%. Technology stocks are benefiting from continued demand for AI infrastructure and semiconductors, helping the Nasdaq regain momentum after last week’s volatility.
- The main focus in the U.S. this week will also be on renewed trade and diplomatic discussions between Washington and Beijing. Treasury officials and Chinese representatives have concluded talks in New York ahead of a planned meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping later this week, with trade, investment and AI among the topics under discussion.
- European markets are also heading toward a stronger open, with DAX futures and EURO STOXX 50 futures both gaining around 0.4%However, European equities remain exposed to energy-related risks, particularly as the region continues to face tight fuel supplies following disruptions to Middle Eastern energy flows.
- The Nikkei is closed on Monday due to Japan’s Silver Week holiday, keeping trading conditions in the region relatively thin. Nikkei futures are nevertheless up around 0.5%, while South Korea’s technology-heavy KOSPI is gaining around 1.5% as semiconductor stocks lead Asian markets higher.
- Currency markets are closely watching the Japanese yen after its sharp decline last week. The yen has stabilized around 156.6 per dollar following reports that Japanese authorities conducted rate checks, raising expectations that Tokyo could intervene if excessive currency weakness continues.
Key market theme: Tech + oil + U.S.-China relations. The decline in oil prices is providing some breathing room for global equities, while strong AI and semiconductor demand is supporting the Nasdaq and Asian technology stocks. At the same time, the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting could become an important catalyst for U.S. and Chinese markets, particularly around trade and technology restrictions. In Japan, attention remains firmly on the yen and the possibility of further official intervention, while the DAX continues to balance stronger equity futures against Europe’s ongoing energy-supply risks.
