Global Market Briefing — 14 August 2026
  • Nasdaq. The Nasdaq Composite closed Thursday 0.81% higher, while the S&P 500 set a record close, and the Dow rose 0.13%. July producer prices were unchanged against a forecast 0.2% rise, with core PPI up 0.2% versus 0.3% expected. Cisco fell 8.4% after its AI-related demand guidance disappointed, while SanDisk rose 13.7% and Netflix climbed more than 5% after Pershing Square disclosed a new position. Futures now imply a 35% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike next month, down from 55% a week earlier. The preliminary August University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading is due today.
  • DAX. The German benchmark closed Thursday down 0.12%, intraday, close to its 52-week high of 26,504.54. Construction, chemicals and media sectors led losses; the MDAX fell 0.27% and the TecDAX 0.20%. TKMS rose 10.19% to an all-time high and Thyssenkrupp gained 9.07% to a five-year high.
  • Nikkei. Tokyo closed on Thursday around 1.1% higher. Japanese producer prices rose 7.2% year-on-year in July, below the 7.4% forecast. On Friday the Nikkei traded 1.5% higher, on course for a weekly gain exceeding 5%. The yen stood at 159.40 per dollar, near the 160 level, following a joint intervention with the United States in late July; traders are pricing a possible Bank of Japan rate hike in September.
  • Gold. Gold fell 0.8% to $4,311 per ounce on Friday as traders took profits after the metal reached its highest level since early June in the previous session.
  • Brent. Brent steadied near $85.86 a barrel on Thursday, on track for a weekly gain of roughly 4% after falling more than 2% on Thursday. Washington said it could maintain its naval blockade of Iran indefinitely and increase economic pressure on Tehran as ceasefire talks stalled. The IEA cut its global demand outlook this week and OPEC lowered its 2026 demand growth forecast to 580,000 barrels per day, a fourth consecutive downward revision, while US crude inventories rose 17.4 million barrels.
