Global Market News Briefing – 22 September 2026
  • The Nasdaq Composite futures gained 2.26% on Monday to a record close of 30780, its first since June, supported by a rise in AI-related stocks. Chipmakers surged as early signs of success for Meta Platforms’ AI agent lifted enthusiasm; Meta jumped 11% and AMD topped $1 trillion in market value. Intel rose 12% and Qualcomm more than 9%, while HP fell over 3% after declining to detail its fiscal-year outlook. Treasury 10-year yields fell below 5%.
  • Germany’s DAX rose 0.76% on Monday as investors digested state election results in northeastern Germany, where projections showed the AfD emerging as the largest party. Technology stocks led European gains, up about 2% on chip-linked names including Aixtron, while energy stocks slipped as oil eased.
  • The Tokyo Stock Exchange is closed from 21 to 23 September for public holidays and reopens on Thursday 24 September. The Nikkei 225 last closed on 18 September at 65,018.95, up 1.38%, after the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25%, the highest since 1995, in a 7-2 vote. Currency and futures markets have focused on the yen and intervention risks during the holiday.
  • Spot gold fell to around $4316 per ounce, down $31.6 from the previous day, with the decline attributed to rising expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue tightening this year.
  • Brent for November delivery rose 1.2% to $101.54 on Tuesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said all Iranian airlines will be shut down from Wednesday. Iranian President Pezeshkian is set to travel to the UN in New York. On Monday Brent fell for a fourth session after Trump said he would probably be open to meeting Pezeshkian, and CENTCOM reported Hormuz crude and LNG flows at a six-month high.
