OIL SHOCK DEEPENS AS METALS FACE FRESH PRESSURE
  • Oil: Brent climbed above $110 as renewed Houthi attacks and U.S. diplomatic withdrawals from Saudi Arabia heightened fears of further supply disruptions.
  • Equities: Asian stocks slipped amid Gulf tensions and uncertainty over AI spending, despite strong earnings from major technology companies.
  • Gold & Silver: Gold fell below $4,100 for the first time since October 14, while silver dropped 2.6% to around $56.44. Higher oil prices are fuelling inflation fears and strengthening the case for interest rates to stay elevated.
  • Copper, Platinum & Palladium: Copper weakened as LME inventories rose 8% in a week, easing supply concerns. Platinum and palladium also declined alongside broader precious-metal selling.

META AND TESLA EARNINGS TRIGGER DIVERGING STOCK REACTIONS
  • Meta (META) reported a 26% year-over-year increase in third-quarter revenue to $64.6 billion, beating expectations, and issued a stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue forecast. Growth in the company’s new AI assistant, Muse, supported investor sentiment, with shares rising more than 4% in after-hours trading. However, rising AI spending continues to weigh on concerns over cash flow.
  • Tesla (TSLA) reported third-quarter revenue of $28.05 billion, beating expectations, while net income fell 44% year over year to $787 million. The company lowered its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $25 billion to $20 billion, while strong free cash flow also drew attention. Despite these developments, Tesla shares fell around 3% in after-hours trading.
Global Market News Summary — 22 October 2026
  • Nasdaq futures slid more than 1% after earnings from Tesla and Meta did little to ease concerns over AI spending, while rebounding oil prices weighed on sentiment. This followed Wednesday, when the Nasdaq led Wall Street higher on strong SpaceX and Super Micro results. Tesla posted Q3 revenue of $28.05 billion, ahead of the $27.88 billion consensus, but cut its 2026 capex forecast to about $20 billion from more than $25 billion. Meta’s revenue grew 26% to $64.6 billion, above estimates. Procter & Gamble, Western Digital, Lockheed Martin and Honeywell report today.
  • The DAX fell more than 1%, retreating from one-month highs, as Middle East tensions lifted oil and mixed US tech earnings revived concerns over AI valuations. On Wednesday the index had closed 1.35% higher at 25,645. SAP and Qiagen released Q3 figures.
  • The Nikkei 225 down 2.65%. Tokyo Electron fell 7%, Advantest 6%, Fujikura 6.2% and SoftBank Group 6.9%, and concerns over Lam Research’s guidance pushed the semiconductor sector down 5.3%. The Topix slipped 1.1%. Japan’s September CPI is due at 8:30 a.m. JST on 23 October.
  • Gold fell 1.42% to $4057 per ounce, down 4.78% over the past month, as crude futures prices rose toward  $100,8, keeping inflation pressures elevated.
  • Brent futures rose 3% to $112,67 a barrel, its first time at that level since 18 May. Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia killed at least one person at Dammam’s civilian airport and two in a drone attack on an oil field. Iran’s IRGC Navy said four vessels were hit in the northern Gulf and three struck mines west of Hormuz. US crude stocks fell 3.06 million barrels, versus an expected 820,000-barrel draw.
Investors Turn Defensive Amid Tech and Oil Risks
  • Defensive Currencies in Demand: Investors are rotating toward the Swiss franc, Japanese yen and British pound as energy prices remain elevated and risk appetite weakens.
  • Tech Stocks Under Pressure: Meta and Tesla earnings have renewed concerns over AI-related capital expenditure, prompting investors to reconsider their exposure to technology stocks.
  • US Midterms in Focus: The upcoming November elections could influence market sentiment, particularly if a Democratic sweep of Congress slows or reverses deregulation.
  • GBP Strengthens: Sterling is benefiting from expectations of further Bank of England tightening. EUR/GBP could remain under pressure within the 0.8360–0.8430 range amid French political uncertainty.
